What is MCAS?
MCAS stands for mast cell activation syndromeMast cells are immune cells found in many tissues. They play a key role in the immune system and in allergic reactions. In MCAS, mast cells, important cells in our immune system, are overactive. Sometimes, there are also more mast cells present in tissues. These cells release substances that trigger inflammatory reactions, which can lead to a wide range of symptoms. These symptoms often resemble allergic reactions and can affect various organ systems.
Why is this important?
MCAS is common in adults and children with persistent symptoms after an infectious disease (PAIS), such as COVID-19, Q fever, Lyme disease, or ME/CFS. The risk of developing MCAS is also increased in certain connective tissue diseases and in cases of persistent symptoms after COVID-19 vaccination. However, it is still often missed. Early recognition helps to better understand symptoms and initiate appropriate treatment.
