Explanation of government policy
Minister De Jonge responded to the petition of Long COVID patients and to the ten-point plan of D'66. Both made proposals in the field of awareness, research and treatment to learn more about Long COVID and to better support patients. In a letter to the committee, the government policy is explained in detail.
The cabinet is pursuing a three-track policy:
- Research to gain insight into the complaints and effective treatment
- Support offer for Long COVID patients
- Support at work
Research
To gain more insight, various studies are being conducted in the Netherlands and internationally into Long COVID. ZonMw is conducting research focused on recovery and aftercare and is working with doctors and paramedics on a multidisciplinary integral guideline 'COVID-19 aftercare'. The RIVM is investigating the nature and extent of Long COVID. Research is being coordinated both nationally and internationally so that scientists can build on each other's work. Previously, 2,8 million euros were allocated for research, now an additional 7,8 million euros have been added.
Care and support
In the Netherlands, there are no research and treatment centers specifically aimed at Long COVID patients. Care is organized within the existing care system. To support patients, C-support has been set up, there is the temporary arrangement for paramedical recovery care, and there are peer support groups, including via Coronaplein.nu and the self-management tool in collaboration with C-support.
Work
The guideline 'Recovery & reintegration in the wake of COVID-19' has increased awareness and recognition of the disease by occupational physicians. The program *'COVID-19 and work' of the Foundation Center Work Health in close collaboration with C-support, develops information and training on COVID-19 and work for employees, employers, self-employed persons, occupational health and safety professionals and other professionals. Research in this area is also being extensively financed. The government has decided that the support of employees with long COVID will take place within the existing social security system; there will be no additional provisions.
