Work and income: financial

If you are unable to work (fully) for an extended period due to illness, this will affect your income. It is good to know that there are financial supplements and schemes you may be entitled to. We provide an overview of the possibilities and refer to useful websites.

Financial supplements: insurance

If you are employed and receive a WIA benefit, there may be financial supplements. This depends on your employer's supplementary insurance policies. You can see this on your payslip or ask your employer. Consult your HR advisor regarding which schemes are available to supplement your income.

  • WGA gap insurance
The WGA gap insurance provides a supplement to the WGA follow-up benefit. There are various variants with extensive or less extensive coverage. Inquire about the policy conditions.
  • WIA basic insurance
For people who are less than 35 percent disabled. If you find a new position where you earn less, this insurance covers (part of) the difference between your old and new salary for a number of years.
  • WIA excess insurance
This insurance provides an income supplement for employees who earn more than the maximum WIA annual salary. In some other cases, WIA excess insurance also offers a supplement to the WIA benefit. Inquire about the policy conditions.
  • PAWW insurance (Private Supplement to Unemployment & Disability Benefits)
This is insurance against long-term unemployment or disability. The insurance provides supplementary income after the end of an unemployment benefit (WW) or disability benefit (WGA). You pay the premium through your employer. You can see this on your payslip. There are also supplements comparable to PAWW. Please inquire about these with your employer.
  • Mortgage cost insurance
This insurance can be taken out by salaried employees when taking out a mortgage. It provides coverage for disability and/or unemployment. It consists of a fixed monthly benefit to enable the continued payment of housing costs.

Financial schemes for low incomes

  • National allowances and municipal schemes
When your income drops significantly, you may find yourself unable to make ends meet. In that case, you may be entitled to a supplement to top up your benefit. To check if you are entitled to a supplement, use this tool from NIBUD: Calculate Your Rights – Nibud
  • Facilities guide
Via AmenitiesGuide You can find out whether you are entitled to national allowances. Additionally, you can search for schemes within your municipality. Currently, around 50 municipalities participate in this. The platform also offers the option of a free consultation.
  • UWV Allowances
Is your income lower than the social minimum? Then you may be entitled to a supplement from UWV. The supplement is an addition to your benefit or, sometimes, to your sick pay. UWV has a Selection aid to check if you are entitled to such an allowance.

Pension and WIA

You do not accrue pension on a WIA benefit. As long as you live in the Netherlands, you do accrue AOW.

Continuation of pension accrual

You may be entitled to (partial) premium-free continuation of pension accrual. Your employer must inform you of this, even if your employment has already ended. You can also contact your pension fund.

You can also arrange for the full continuation of pension accrual yourself for a fee. However, this involves substantial costs. Your pension fund can provide you with more information about this.

Disability pension

A disability pension is an additional income supplement paid out by your pension fund if you become disabled. It supplements your WIA benefit so that you experience less loss of income.

The amount depends on:

  • The degree of disability.
  • The pension scheme.
  • The previous salary.

Check with your pension fund whether you are entitled to this.

Supplementary Income Provision for the Elderly (AIO)

If you have not accrued a full state pension, for example due to residing abroad, you may be eligible for a supplementary income provision for the elderly (AOI). The AIO supplements the state pension up to the social minimum applicable to you.
